AiA Presents Spring Reign

 

 
Something Red is an annual call for art and juried exhibition that centers around the color red. This perennial favorite is open to all Oregon visual artists and is jointly produced by Artists in Action and Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery of Salem, Oregon. The challenge: All submitted artwork, of any medium and style, should incorporate RED as a focal point or primary color in the composition. 

Registration for the call officially opens Wednesday, October 20 via ArtCall.org (this site). Once registered, artists may submit up to three works of art until the Saturday, November 21 deadline. The exhibit will be held at Salem’s Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery and their website beginning Saturday, December 5. (Note the change from our traditional Wednesday night opening). In addition, select works may be displayed at participating downtown businesses. See below for full exhibition details.
 

 

Exhibitor Eligibility:

  • Something Red is open to all Oregon visual artists; you do not need to be a member to participate.
  • You must to be able to deliver and pickup your artwork in Salem, OR; no shipments.

Entry Fees:

  • AiA Members in good standing: $30
  • Artist, non-member: $40
  • Students (up to age 25): $20
  • Participants may submit up to three (3) works for consideration into the juried exhibition. 
  • Fees will be collected during the online artwork submission process. 
  • Please select appropriate entry fee as submissions will be cross-referenced with our active member list.
  • Consider becoming an AiA Member if you’re not one already. If you’re unsure of your membership status, please contact Jim Richards at aia@artistsinaction.org.

Artwork Specifications:

  • To be considered, the work must incorporate the color red as a focal point or primary color in the composition.
  • All mediums and styles of visual art will be considered including painting, collage, textiles, sculpture, photography, mixed media, etc.
  • Art must meet professional presentation standards; NO frame damage, dirty mats or unpainted/unfinished edges.
  • 2-D Art must be no larger than 20" x 24" inches including the frame. If you would like to submit a larger piece, please contact us at aia@artistsinaction.org to see if it can be accommodated.
  • 2-D Art must be ready to hang using a wire which must not be visible; sawtooth hangers or other single fastening devices are not allowed.
  • Non-framed artwork on wrapped canvas or cradled panels are acceptable, providing the sides are painted or stained.
  • Non-framed artwork such as metal images that are professionally equipped with wall stand-off blocks equipped for hanging are acceptable.
  • Artists wishing to display 3D artwork must provide their own secure stand.
  • All art must have an ID label affixed to the back with artist name, artwork title, sale price and contact info; you may print labels directly from your Artcall.org User dashboard.
  • Please note: AiA reserves the right not to hang art that does not meet above criteria.

Submitting Entries & Deadline:

  • All registrations, entry submissions and fee payments must be done using ArtCall.org (this site).
  • Registration begins Wednesday, October 20. You may begin the registration and payment process prior to submitting entries.
  • When submitting each entry, you'll need to provide: Title, Physical Dimensions (incl. frame), Medium and Sale Price (if not for sale, enter "0.00"), and attach one high quality JPG image of the art piece.
  • The deadline to submit art entries is Saturday, November 21 by 11:00 pm.
  • You may log back into the ArtCall site any time to add, delete, change and/or edit your entries up until the deadline.
  • Upon submitting each entry, you will receive an auto-generated email confirming that your image has been received. Check your spam folder if you do not see it come through.
  • You will be notified via email on Monday, November 23 whether or not your art has been accepted into the Something Red exhibit.

About ArtCall:

  • Artcall.org is a distinctly separate site from the AiA website and requires registering for an ArtCall account to participate. You only need to register once; then simply log in for our future calls for art.
  • ArtCall provides an easy way for artists to pay the entry fee and submit their art and provides AiA coordinators with an effective way to manage all aspects of the call. 
  • Being a registrant of ArtCall has the added bonus of allowing you to participate in calls of other organizations that use the site.
  • If you’re not familar with using the ArtCall interface, these helpful how-to videos are a good place to start.
  • AiA members who need assistance with submitting their work in digital format and/or using this site should email Jim Richards at aia@artistsinaction.org.

Image Requirements:

  • Your artwork will be juried into the exhibit by our viewing your photo(s) online so make sure they are high quality! Use good lighting. When capturing make sure the object is square in the viewfinder and that the desired image fills the viewfinder. Be sure your subject is in sharp focus.
  • For 2-D art consider removing the frame, glass and mat to avoid glare and reflection distractions. For 3-D work, use a solid colored background and get close to the object. 
  • Use image editing software or an on-line image editing tool such as PicResize.com to ensure your images meeting the following requirements:
  • Images must be under 4mb and a maximum of 4800px on the longest side. Minimim size is 960px. Bigger is better though.
  • Image files must be saved and submitted in .JPG format.
  • You DO NOT need to name your files in any specific way.

Art Delivery & Pickup: 

  • Elsinore Gallery is scheduling art drop-offs. Make your appointment at www.elsinoregallery.com/sr-artist-page.
  • Drop-Offs : Wednesday, November 25 thru Saturday, November 28, 2020
    Deliver accepted artwork to Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery, 444 Ferry St SE, Salem, OR 97301.
  • Pick-Ups : Monday, January 4 thru Friday, January 8, 2021
    Pick up unsold artwork from Elsinore Gallery.

Jurying, Judging & Awards:

  • Jurying in/out of the exhibit will be done by an AiA panel of reviewers.
  • Judging for award designations will be done in person, at the gallery in Salem, by a qualified, unafilliated artist.
  • On opening day Awards will be presented for First, Second and Third Place as well as up to three (3) Honorable Mentions. Sponsors may also present additional awards.
  • Award winners will be announced online at Elsinore Gallery, the AiA Website and social media.
  • This event will also feature a People’s Choice award to be determined and announced once the exhibition has concluded. 

Art Exhibition (Gallery+Virtual), Reception (Virtual) & Commission:

  • The main exhibit will hosted by Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery, 444 Ferry St SE, Salem, OR 97301. Please refer to the Elsinore Gallery website for regular hours of operation.
  • Although there will be no public reception, artists and guests may visit the gallery in small groups (10 or less) on opening day, Saturday, December 5, 2020 from 10:00 to 5:00.
  • Elsinore will have additional gallery hours for private viewings on Sunday, December 6 from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. Please call ahead to schedule your visit this day. 503-581-4642
  • There will be a limit of 10 people in the gallery at a time. 
  • In addition to the gallery space, select downtown businesses may display artists’ works at their locations. Participating businesses to be announced. 
  • Elsinore Gallery will feature an online virtual gallery of all works on their website including the award results. All artwork, regardless of display location, will be available for sale online, and will indicate where if it is being displayed at another business. 
  • All works that are available for sale will be subject to a 40% commission when sold, regardless of display location.
  • The gallery's virtual exhibit will also feature the ability to cast a ballot for People's Choice. All artwork, including those installed at local businesses, will be available for voting for this public-bestowed award.
  • The exhibition will run thru December 30.
  • An event/award presentation will be produced and posted to the AIA website and social media.  
  • Once the exhibition has concluded, an online gallery of all artwork that was displayed will be published on the AiA website.

Terms & Conditions:

By registering and submitting works into this exhibition, you agree to the above terms and conditions. Furthermore, you consent to your name and artwork images being displayed on the AiA website and/or social media platforms and in print and online materials for the sole purpose of promoting the AiA organization and its artists. Of course, you retain the copyright to your artwork. You will be given credit for artwork used wherever possible.
